The first cheerleaders were organized by Princeton Pep club member Thomas Peebler. The six cheerleaders performed at a Princeton University vs. University of Minnesota American football game on November 2, 1898. The head cheerleader was Johnny Campbell and all six cheerleaders were men. Women cheerleaders did not appear until the early 1920s. The first use of pom Poms or pompons can be traced back to the 1930s, all handmade from paper. Fred Gastoff invented the first vinyl pom Poms in 1965, first used by the International Cheerleading Foundation.

Learn this simple method to get your new pom Poms nice and fluffy.

Here's How:

1. Un package your new pom Poms.

2. Shake them out.

3. Take a few strands in your hand and starting at the unattached end, scrunch them up.

4. Continue Step 3 until you've scrunched all the strands.

5. Repeat above on your second pom pom.
 

It's best to get some pom Poms ready prior to sale or distribution. They sell much better when presented well.

Pom Poms were first used by Cheerleaders in the 1930's. They were made out of crepe paper and hard to care for. It was not unusual for the strands to fall out or the colors to run when they came in contact with moisture. As the saying goes, "You've come a long way, Baby".

Today's vinyl pom pom was invented around 1965 by Fred Gastoff and introduced by the International Cheerleading Foundation. They are easy to keep and come in a wide range of brilliant colors.

Choosing your pom Poms is not a simple matter. They can be ordered with metallic strands, one of the most popular according Pompon Central, regular plastic strands, wet looking plastic strands, or a combination. Then you need to decide whether you want the strands to be wide, narrow, or a mixture of both.

Pom Poms come in a variety of colors and color mixes.  Bright colors, red, gold, and blue are probably the most popular. High school gold, blue, and maroon are their most-ordered poly colors. The color mixes to choose from are solid, salt and pepper.
